The name Tangarina is my little invention: Tango + Bailarina (Spanish for dancer). It’s a playful word, but the mission behind it is serious: to bring the heart of authentic Argentine Tango to Brisbane with warmth, clarity, and a lot of love for the journey.
For many years, we’ve been privileged to continue the work begun by the late, great Hugo Fernández, with whom I initially ran Alma de Tango. Hugo was a true devotee of tango; he lived it, breathed it, and could probably have danced a tanda in his sleep (and still stayed on the beat). His dedication to tango fundamentals, musicality, and the real connection between leaders and followers continues to guide what we do today.
At Tangarina Shirley, we’re passionate about building strong tango fundamentals. Because beautiful tango isn’t magic; it’s mechanics… plus feeling. Our teaching focuses on developing exceptional core skills for both tango roles, whether you dance solo or with a partner. We believe that a truly rewarding tango experience begins with a solid base. And yes, I will absolutely use the house metaphor: you can’t build a tango palace on a wobbly foundation.
But here’s the important part: we don’t just teach steps. We teach people. We care deeply about each student’s progress, confidence, and joy, creating a supportive, encouraging environment where you can grow at your own pace. We’ll help you practice with purpose, experiment without fear, and find your own voice in the dance. Tango is a lifelong craft, and we’re in it with you.
We also believe tango is better when it’s shared. That’s why we put a lot of heart into building a welcoming community, a place where you can feel seen, supported, and inspired. Whether you’re a complete beginner or refining advanced details of traditional Argentine tango, Tangarina Shirley is here to help you dance with stronger technique, deeper connection, and more musical freedom.
Come as you are. We’ll build from there.
